Lee's Review: "Savages"

(WLTX) - Ben and Chon are best buds who share everything...including Ophelia, their mutual girlfriend. It may sound like a wacky domestic life - but wacky weed makes people do wacky things. And, apparently, their weed is the wackiest! In fact, it's so potent that it's gotten the attention of the Mexican Baja Cartel who want to strike a deal. But you can't make deals with savages.

Once they buy some time for an answer, the young entrepreneurs intend to flee to Indonesia. However, before they can board their plane, the third member of their party is taken hostage. Now, if they want to see Ophelia alive again, they'll need to cooperate. That is, unless they can work out a plan with a crooked Federal Agent.

The acting among the ensemble cast is never really bad. In fact, the seasoned pros (Travolta, Salma Hayek, Benicio Del Toro) all fare quite well. But I simply had trouble believing that these youngsters were capable of outsmarting their captors. Blake Lively's voice-over also tended to detract from the film's credibility.

People are probably hoping for a revival of "Scarface" from Oliver Stone. But, instead, they get a lecture on the potential dangers of the world's mostobtainable gateway drug. Are the stakes really that high - or is it just the director?

Overall, the story is fairly entertaining. It just lacks the heaviness we anticipate from the trailer. Not exactly what you'd expect from a film with a love triangle at the center. Still, not a bad movie. But, to be on the safe side, I'd wait for the DVD.
