Columbia, SC (WLTX) - For more than 100 years, the Girl Scouts have helped girls develop positive values, and leadership skills through their cookie sales. And now, there's is an app for that. The Girl Scouts of South Carolina, Mountain to Midlands is launching the next phase of their plan to go high tech in cookie sales, with what called the COCO Direct APP.
Rachel Benefield is a top cookie seller and she loves what selling the famous Girl Scout cookies has taught her. She tells News 19, "Before Girl Scouts I was kinda shy, but doing the booths and meeting people that I don't know has put me in that place where I am not afraid to ask anybody anything."
Rachel says even with the new APP she will still go door to door, host booth cookie sales and even use Facebook to reach her customers. But this year, she says, the process just got a little easier with the COCO Direct APP.
Troop leader and cookie mom Vivian Benefiled explains how everything can be done online. She says, "These girls scouts will be able to send an e-card that has a direct link. to their customers where are their family and friends. anybody over the united states. They will be able to click on the link, order the items that they would like which will be full cases, half cases or the new cookie, or a sample pack which has everything except the new cookie. They'll pay for it with their credit card and have it shipped directly to their house."
Rachel says the app is showing the girls just one more way to do business, "A lot of girls now days are glad that we are using it, because they have grown up with technology. And all the little girls are glad that they get to use it. "
The new technology adds a digital layer that broadens the skills that girls scouts learn. Rachel says those include "business ethics, money management, time management, how to interact with people goal setting and everything that comes with that."
The Girl Scouts are launching a new gluten free chocolate chip short bread cookie this year as well, called Trios. It's available only through the app.
But don't worry, if you are not ready for the technology booth sales are coming soon. Cookies go on sale on January 9, 2015. Booth sales will take place February 20 through March 16, 2015. All the proceeds from the cookie sales go to fund the Girl Scouts' service projects in the community.
