Forest Acres, SC (WLTX) - An intersection in Forest Acres has been named after Greg Alia, the Midlands officer killed in the line of duty nearly one year ago.
A ceremony was held Thursday to commemorate that the corner of Forest Drive and Beltline Boulevard will be called the "Gregory Thomas Alia Intersection."
Alia's widow, Kassy, and his young son were there at the event.
"It's our chance as a community to not just drive by this sign in the years to come as another street that's named, but to talk about Greg and his legacy and what he left and have his legacy live on," she said.
Alia was killed by a suspect on September 30, 2015 while responding to an incident at the mall along Beltline. The 32-year-old was a seven-year veteran of the Forest Acres Police Department. He grew up in the Columbia area, and was a graduate of Richland Northeast High School and the University of South Carolina.
The renaming of the intersection had been approved by the South Carolina General Assembly during the most recent session.
