Columbia, SC (WLTX) – Our furry companions become family so when we lose them it can be tough. This is the reason why Pawmetto Lifeline has a pet loss support group.
Their meetings provide a safe place for folks to express their emotions and find ways to push past the pain.
“Society’s not real helpful in dealing with grief anyway so you know grief of a pet gets kind of poo pooed sometimes, you know people will say ‘it’s just a dog, you know go get another one,’” Counselor Mary Feaster explained. “They don’t get it. So we get it, so we want people to have a place to come to share about their pet.”
Feaster leads the support group. She said she lost her dogs Scooter and Honey within six months of each other. She said she does not have any children, so it was an extremely hard blow.
“We want people to know that it’s okay, it’s okay to be sad. You maybe lost your best friend. Somebody that’s been there you know through all your ups and downs and they give unconditional love,” the group leaders explained. “They’re always happy to see you so when you lose that, of course you’re going to be sad and we just want to give a little helping hand when that happens.”
Feaster said pet loss is inevitable since pets live shorter than humans do. The group goes over how to know when it’s time to move on.
The group meets at Pawmetto Lifeline once a month.
