Hero Throws Out First Pitch

Lexington, SC (WLTX) - The Dixie Youth World Series continues this week in Lexington but before the first two teams squared off on Monday, a hero was needed to throw out the first pitch.

"I've been blessed to do a lot of things over the past few weeks," said Retired Marine and Medal of Honor Recipient Kyle Carpenter.

Since being awarded the Medal of Honor back in June, Retired Marine and USC student Kyle Carpenter has been on a nonstop tour across the country from the Late Show with David Letterman to throwing out the first pitch for the San Diego Padres.

"Very surreal, I almost wake up most morning and look back and think back and say man did that really happen."

He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery while in Afghanistan.

Back in 2010 Carpenter threw himself on a grenade during a Taliban attack, intentionally placing himself between a grenade and another Marine, saving his fellow service member's life.

"I'm going into my second year at USC and now balancing this side of my life with the student side is going to be different."

After his nationwide tour, he finally got to come back home and throw out the first pitch at the Dixie Youth World Series.

"I wish I could go out there and put on a glove and play shortstop. I love baseball and football growing up and this is a great organization, its a great community and I'm just excited to be a part of it."

In the midst of all the celebrities and trips that he's been on, he says spending time with his mother at the 9/11 memorial and museum reminded him of why he decided to serve our country.

"To kind of see where everything started on the war on terror and kind of the reason why I joined and the reason why I got injured, all from that one day and one moment in history."

Carpenter starts his second year at USC this fall and is just hoping he can be a regular student, despite being a true hero in the midst of his classmates.
