Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Friday night the Indie Grits Festival kicked off in Columbia with a block party.
Indie Grits was started in 2007 aimed at profiling the do-it-yourself organizations in the city.
"We just really wanted to create a festival the best of low budget do it yourself film making across the southeast but over the last eight years we really expanded it to take on all kinds of southern culture," said Andy Smith with the Nick Theater.
This was Mollie Williamson's first time performing at the festival.
"it's this gritty do-it-yourself thing that you would not normally get in South Carolina so it brings a lot of culture and a lot of new experiences for everyone in the community," said Williamson.
Indie Grits has grown into a staple of the city's cultural life, giving a look at the interest in independent media making but at the same time giving thousands of visitors and locals a look at some things that they aren't use to seeing in Columbia.
"A big part of our mission at the Nick is to not be contained by our walls, we want to be out in the streets out in the community and exposing people to the work we do and the work our friends do like Girls Rock Columbia," said Smith.
