Interim Columbia Police Chief Resigns

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago has resigned.

Columbia City Manager Teresa Wilson confirmed Santiago sent his notice Thursday afternoon.

"We thank him for his service," Wilson said in a statement.

Santiago had been serving as interim chief since last April when he took over for Randy Scott, who resigned suddenly last year.

Wilson says Major Melron Kelly will immediately begin serving as acting chief, leading the daily operations of the department. Kelly is a Columbia native, and graduated from Columbia High School and South Carolina State University. He's been with the department since 1999.

He is expected to serve in this role until a new chief can be found.
