Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Interstate 126 West in Columbia was briefly backup up after an incident Friday morning where a person leapt from a bridge and was later taken into custody.
The problems began 10:30 a.m. near the Greystone Boulevard/Riverbanks Zoo exit.
Richland County deputies say there was a car accident at that location, where the vehicle struck the guardrail. Both the Columbia Police Department and Richland County deputies tell News19 that a person then jumped over the bridge that crosses the Saluda River. After landing below, the person began walking near the woodline. That person has since been taken into custody by officers and was transported to the hospital for observation.
It's unclear why the person jumped at this point.
All lanes of traffic were blocked, but the roadway has mostly reopened now.
