Irmo Residents Closer To Parking On Lawns and Streets

Residents in Irmo are asking town leaders where they can park. Ordinances prohibited parking on the lawn and in the street.

Irmo, SC (WLTX) - Irmo Town Council voted to approve the first of three readings that would allow residents to park on their lawns and in the streets Thursday.

Currently residents will be unable to park on their lawns starting in February after an ordinance was passed just a few weeks ago. Residents are also prohibited from parking in the streets and have been since the mid 80's, but residents and council agreed that it was rarely enforced.

The meeting lasted for over three hours and dozens of residents spoke in support and opposition of the changes before council openly discussed their thoughts and made their decisions.

"As far as the vehicles, boats and cars in people's yards, it's ugly and tacky and I don't want that either," Virginia Wiggins said.

Wiggins also spoke out against parking in the streets. Meanwhile, others said they had no choice, but to use their lawns and the street since they didn't have the space in their driveway.

"It's our yard. We pay the taxes. We pay for the mortgage and why should we be penalized for what we have?" Terri Humphries asked.

Council voted 3-2 to amend the ordinance that prohibits parking on lawns with Councilman Julius Waites and Mayor Hardy King in opposition. Council voted unanimously to allow parking in the streets and will need to approve the amendments two more times before becoming final.
