On October 28, 2013, Sheriff deputy Cody Blackmon and his wife Amy were traveling on US 1 in Kershaw county when they came upon an accident near James West road and US 1.

A pickup truck was in the middle of the road and a motorcycle was lying nearby on top of its rider, a US Army soldier.

According to reports, Deputy Blackmon immediately rushed to the aid of the injured soldier and pulled the motorcycle off of him. The solider had a serious injury to one of his legs and was bleeding profusely. Amy Blackmon, a registered nurse at the Emergency room of Kershaw Health was able to administer on the spot medical treatment and stop the bleeding.

The soldiers wife and small children had been following him in their car and observed the accident as well as the life-saving efforts of the Blackmons.

The soldier was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia where he lost his leg from the knee down. He is currently with his Army unit in N.C. and is progressing nicely with a new prosthetic leg according to the report.

Sheriff Matthews said, "There is no doubt that the quick and professional actions of Cody and Amy Blackmon saved this man's life. Both of them are experienced in dealing with emergencies of different kinds. I can't think of two better people to come to the scene of an accident like this and properly handle it. I am very proud of both of them for having received this recognition by the Veterans of Foreign Wars."

According to Matthews, no one at the Sheriff's department knew of this incident unit a N.C. newspaper contacted the office wanting to do a story detailing the actions of the Blackmons. "Cody and Amy apparently sought no special recognition for this and just went on about their normal business, " said Matthews.
