Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police are accusing a former Lexington County teacher of having sex with a student.
Michael Evan Salley, 25, is charged with the following: sexual battery of a student, 16 or 17 years of age, no aggravated force or coercion.
Officers say on December 24 of last year, Salley engaged in sexual activity with a 17-year-old student from Gray Collegiate Academy while at a Columbia home.
An administrator found out about the incident this month, and told police about it on October 13. The school says he resigned on that same date.
Gray Collegiate released the following statement on the arrest:
"We were informed today that on October 20, 2016, Evan Salley, a former science teacher and coach at Gray Collegiate Academy (GCA), was arrested and charged with sexual battery of a minor. Our understanding is that this charge arises out of events that occurred off campus in December 2015. Mr. Salley resigned his employment on October 13, 2016, and the school has reported his resignation to the South Carolina Department of Education.
"The wellbeing and safety of students is a top priority of GCA. We are limited in these circumstances as to what we can properly say publicly, because there is an ongoing criminal investigation of the situation. Under no circumstances does GCA condone or tolerate any inappropriate conduct of its employees. If information is ever presented to school personnel that any such inappropriate conduct may be taking place, regardless of when or where it occurs, the school immediately investigates and handles each situation as is appropriate.
GCA has been and will continue to be in full cooperation with law enforcement during their investigation of this serious charge. Anyone with any information relevant to this matter is strongly encouraged to contact the Columbia Police Department, at 803-545-3010."
