Lexington Runner Dies After Being Hit By Car

Lexington, SC (WLTX) -  A runner has died after being hit by a car in Lexington County early Wednesday morning.

Coroner Margaret Fisher says 38-year-old John Flanagan was hit while jogging before 6 a.m. on Sunset Boulevard. She says Flanagan was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

The running group F3 Lexington SC tweeted a statement saying in part "our friend John Flanagan was hit by a vehicle during his normal run... John is an experienced runner familiar with this route and accustomed to early-morning conditions. While details of the incident are not available, he was wearing a headlamp, a reflective safety vest, and blinking lights for visibility."

The group held a special run Thursday morning for Flanagan.

We've received several calls and messages with conflicting information about this incident. We reached out to the Lexington Police Department to verify if any of these claims were true.

Corporal Cameron Mortenson says this was not a hit-and-run.

He also says the rumors about Flanagan being hit on the sidewalk are not true. He says Flanagan was in the road when he was hit by a car.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lexington Police Department.
