Man Assaulted at Jail Gets $750K Settlement

Richland County, SC (WLTX) - A man assaulted by a Richland County jail guard last year will receive a $750,000 settlement with the county.

Dick Harpootlian, who's the attorney for the victim, Robert Sweeper III, confirmed the agreement Thursday.

A federal jury found Robin Smith guilty of violating Sweeper's rights following an incident in February of 2013 at the detention center. Smith, who worked at the facility, was conducting a routine check of Sweeper's cell when he twisted Sweeper's wrist and arm and kicked him in the upper body.

At the time, Sweeper was restrained in handcuffs. Prosecutors concluded that Sweeper posed no threat to Smith.

Sweeper was hospitalized for his injuries. Following the assault, Sweeper filed a lawsuit against the county, calling for them to pay his medical bills and asking for punitive damages.
