Man Shot by Deputies in Lexington County Dies

Lexington County, SC (WLTX) - State Law Enforcement Division agents say a man shot by Lexington County deputies earlier this week has died.

Kimber Key, 59, had been receiving treatment at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia for injuries he sustained early Tuesday morning.

Lexington County Sheriff Lewis McCarty says Key, who's from Florida, was shot by officers in the kitchen of his brother's home on White Falls Drive just after 2:30 a.m. According to the sheriff, Key's brother had called deputies because he said his relative had been threatening himself with a knife.

McCarty said Key was shot in the upper torso during the encounter.

SLED agents are investigating what led up to to the shooting, and say there is no dash cam or body cam video. McCarty said Tuesday the two officers involved are on administrative leave with pay.

SLED spokesman Thom Berry tells News 19 this is the 15th officer-involved shooting this year.
