Ex-Cop Charged with Murder to Testify in His Own Defense

The man charged with killing an unarmed officer will testify in court Tuesday.

Charleston, SC (AP) - The former South Carolina patrolman charged with murder in the shooting death of an unarmed motorist is expected to take the stand in his own defense on Tuesday.

Court has adjourned for the day in the trial of Michael Slager, who faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted in the shooting death of 50-year-old Walter Scott. Slager was fired from the department after the shooting.

Scott was shot five times in the back in April of 2015 as he fled a traffic stop. The shooting was captured by a bystander on cellphone video that stunned the nation.

Defense attorney Andy Savage told the court he plans to call Slager to the stand Tuesday.

The trial entered a fifth week Monday and the case is expected to go to the jury later this week.
