Lee County, SC (WLTX)- The Lee County Animal Shelter is busting at the seams with pit bull mix dogs.
"We may get 7 out of the door and 15 will come in," said Doris Winstead, shelter administrator.
Winstead says if the dogs are not adopted out they will have to be put to sleep. She says the challenge with pit mixes is finding the right home.
"People feel like it is just a piece of property," said Winstead.
Walking through the shelter you see dogs with different tempers, some are social and others are very shy and timid. Before the adoption process is complete Doris says they require a vet reference, a home visit and the dogs must be spayed or neutered.
"People have got to become responsible for their animals, every shelter in South Carolina is jam packed full of pit bulls and labs," said Winstead.
