Columbia, SC (WLTX) – A Red Cross volunteer has returned to the Midlands after a relief trip to St. Croix.

Weeks after Hurricane Maria devastated the U.S. Virgin Islands, many people there are still trying to recover.

“All the power lines are down on the west side, debris on the road, it was impassable, destruction was I have never seen it like that before,” American Red Cross Volunteer Angelo Costa explained. “Most of the water is contaminated.”

He was there for three weeks helping to feed 30,000 people still overcoming the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

“People were fantastic. They very versatile people. They amazed me. They were so thankful for what we gave them. So thankful,” the volunteer beamed.

He said most of the island still doesn't have power and it could be until March until it's all restored.

“They're Americans,” he said of helping them. “You don't turn your back on people.”

Costa says he is headed to help hurricane victims in Puerto Rico in just a few weeks.

The American Red Cross is still on the island helping those devastated by the storm and still taking donations.
