Body Recovered from Congaree River in Downtown Columbia

A swimmer that went missing on Sunday was found by DNR today not far from where he went missing

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Search crews have recovered a body in the Congaree River near downtown Columbia in the same area where a swimmer went missing over the weekend.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said around 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon the remains of a man were discovered not far from the Gervais Street Bridge.

The coroner will now identify the body. While it's expected it is the same person crews have been searching for, that wont be known for sure until the coroner's report comes back.

Fire officials began looking for the person around 12:00 p.m.  Sunday.

A group of four people were swimming in an area of the river between the Gervais Street Bridge and Blossom Street Bridge when they were overcome by the water. One of them was able to get to some nearby rocks, while two others were rescued by a person who saw that they were in trouble. The fourth person, an unidentified man, went under the water and wasn't seen again.

Dive teams and boats searched until dark Sunday, aided in the search by a helicopter. By by mid Sunday evening, the decision was made to stop when there was no more daylight.

The crews searched again Monday, but to no avail.
