Mom Killed, Son Hurt on I-95 Returning from Little League Football Game

Clarendon County, SC (WPRI/WLTX) - A Rhode Island mother is dead and a her son is seriously hurt after a crash on Interstate 95 in Clarendon County in South Carolina.

WPRI in Providence reports that 32-year-old Ivette Figueroa died in a collision Friday morning. Her 10-year-old son remains in ICU at a hospital in Florida. 

The collision happened around 3:10 a.m. Friday near the 113 mile marker, which is near the Highway 301 exit. 

According to friends and family, the two were in Florida to attend a Pop Warner football championship game in Florida involving their team, the West Elmwood Intruders. They were with another team mom driving players back when the crash happened. 

The second mother's son is also hospitalized.

Figueroa has two other children.

"She's just a loving, caring person, said Tiffanie Mitchell, who knew the Figueroa family. "It's devastating that this happened."

A total of seven people were in Figueroa's SUV. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the vehicle ran off the road, struck a tree, and overturned.

The collision remains under investigation.
