Net Neutrality and Small Business

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - On December 14 the Federal Communications Commission may rollback internet regulations put in place under the Obama Administration.

"Net neutrality is kind of a big topic of discussion for us," Stephen Miano said.

Miano owns That Computer Store in Irmo.

"As a small business owner I am terrified of the possibility that my cable bill could triple because I'm not big enough to absorb the cost," he said.

Next month the FCC may roll back regulations that make sure internet service providers treat all websites fairly, allowing them to increase or decrease internet speeds.  FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said regulations prevented innovation.

"Because those regulations are so prescriptive many companies, big and small, have told us that they are holding back on investment in their internet networks," Pai said.

Miano said he doesn't buy it.

"I've thought long and hard about that argument and I just can't see how it makes any sense under analysis," he said.

Adam Ruonala, Chief Marketing Officer for Palmetto State Armory, said the possible rollbacks may create a slippery slope.

"What if one service provider then says, 'We don't support firearms,' and no longer are people on our server able to access firearms related websites, the firearms transactions and that's when now a Second Amendment right is infringed upon because of somebody's personal belief," Ruonala said.

FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn said those concerns are not out of the realm of possibility.

"That can very well happen. That can very well happen because there will not be a referee on the field or a cop on the beat for that entity to complain about it or do anything about it," she said.

Clyburn said she hopes the item will be removed from the Commission's Decemeber 14 agenda, but there's no sign that's going to happen.

The FCC Board of Commissioners is comprised of five members. It currently has a republican majority
