Newberry County, SC (WLTX) - Newberry County deputies will start carrying Narcan, an anti-overdose drug.
As first responders to most overdose scenes, the tool would potentially allow deputies to save lives.
“We will continue to investigate, arrest, and prosecute people who sell or possess heroin and all other illegal drugs,” Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said in a statement. “However, for the person who has overdosed, this can be a second chance at life. This second chance will hopefully be a wakeup call to the person and priceless to their family.”
Deputies received training on the effect of opioids on the body and how to administer the drug before receiving their doses.
Officer safety was also an issue, according to Foster. The tool would allow deputies to treat an accident exposure to Fentanyl, which can be inhaled or ingested through the skin.
