Pelion Teen Dies on Spring Break Trip

Ottawa County, OH - A Pelion teenager has died in a boating accident on Lake Erie in Ohio.

A spokesperson for the Ottawa County, Ohio sheriff's office told News19 17-year-old Paige Widmer's died in the collision that took place sometime overnight..

Another woman, 33-year-old Amy Santus, has also been confirmed as dying in the accident.

The Coast Guard says they and two other people were aboard a 21-foot Tracker Boat, which was found with its stern partially submerged Thursday morning on Toussaint Reef, approximately five miles northeast of Locust Point in Ohio. Both of them were wearing life jackets.

Crews began their search around 2 a.m. Thursday. The first body was found by a private boater and the U.S. Coast Guard found the second body.

The other two occupants of the boat have not been found. The group's truck and boat trailer were located at a boat ramp.

"This is a large-scale cooperative search, harnessing Coast Guard, federal, local and Canadian resources," says Cmdr. Austin Ives, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator at Coast Guard Sector Detroit.

At a news conference at 1:30 p.m., Ohio officials they people on board the boat were sending pictures back to family members.

Thursday afternoon, students at Pelion High School held a prayer vigil for Widmer. They said she was a member of the school's volleyball team, and was away from town of a spring break trip with her family.

Even though the school is out of session, the district said they were bringing in counselors for the students.
