Red Cross Assisting Victims of Clinton Nursing Home Fire

CLINTON, SC, August 27, 2014 – Red Cross of the Western Carolinas is on-scene at the Bailey Manor, 300 Jacobs Highway in Clinton, to assist residents of the assisted living and skilled nursing facility who were evacuated earlier today due to a fire.

The Red Cross has licensed health and mental health professionals providing services at the scene and at the hospital where 8 injured persons were taken for treatment.

A total of 40 residential units have been evacuated and it is expected they will remain so at least until tomorrow. Residents have been relocated to an affiliated facility or with their families. The Red Cross is distributing clothing to evacuees and is collaborating with the facility's management team to determine any other immediate needs.

The Red Cross will back on-scene in the morning to continue providing assistance to those affected.

WSPA-TV reports that a driver crashed into the retirement home late Wednesday afternoon, running through the main entrance and lobby, and running 20-30 feet down a hallway before coming to a stop. The driver was rescued from the vehicle that caught fire, and caused the fire at Bailey Manor. Officials told WSPA that the driver was combative during the rescue, and were unsure if the person had a medical condition or not.
