SC State Lays Off 90 Temporary, Part-Time Workers

Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina State University announced Tuesday it will lay off 90 temporary and part-time employees as it works to fix an ongoing financial crisis.

The university says the employees got their termination letters Tuesday, and their final day will be Thursday. The university told the employees the cuts were necessary because of "significant budgetary challenges."

The employees include administrative assistants, office coordinators, athletics staff, and security specialists. Full-time staff will pick up the responsibilities of those employees who were let go.

"Because of our financial situation, we've always known we would have to make some tough decisions," said SC State University President Thomas Elzey in a released statement. "These terminations were difficult, but necessary in order to help the university to get back on track and recover," Elzey said.

These are the second round of layoffs for the university.

Last month, the South Carolina Budget and Control Board approved a $6 million loan to SC State to help it pay its obligations. Elzey, however, says it will take about $13.6 million to help with the school's cash flow problems, caused by overspending and declining enrollment.

In early April, a state inspector general's report concluded that school officials misused funds for years to cover deficits.
