School Lockdown Triggered by Man Shooting Squirrels

Lexington County, SC (WLTX) After reports of a gunman sighted in some nearby woods, a Midlands school district locked down an elementary school as a precaution.

However, sheriff deputies now say it was just a man shooting squirrels near its property.

According to the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, they suggested that administrators at Midway Elementary School lock the school down after a school bus driver reported having seen a man in the woods, on private property, near the school. The driver reportedly said the man was armed with a rifle or shotgun.

Deputies investigated the report, but were initially unable to locate the man or why the man would have been in the woods armed with a gun.

After finding nothing, the lockdown at Midway Elementary was lifted. Lexington One says students were unaware of of the lockdown and instruction was never interrupted.

Deputies say the man was lawfully hunting the squirrels, and that he posed no threat to the school.
