Senators Request Special Session For V.C. Summer Fix

Senators request special session to discuss VC Summer

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Lawmakers are continuing to speak out about the abandonment of construction at the V.C. Summer nuclear plant.

"We really have to dig into this to figure out what happened and why it happened,” says Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey, R-Edgefield.

Senator Massey and Senate Minority Leader Nikki Setzler are requesting that the General Assembly reconvene..

"This is a tremendously important and huge issue for the state of South Carolina,” says Senator Setzler, D-Lexington.

The senators sent a letter to Senate President Pro Tem Hugh Leatherman, asking that he and House Speaker Jay Lucas, bring the Senate and House back for a special session.

"What we really want to do is have the legislature come back to pass a resolution that just says that Santee Cooper and the Public Service Commission as SCANA's request, neither one of those can pass rate increases onto customers until we can figure out what's going on," says Senator Massey.

Speaker Lucas responded to the letter saying that he isn't ready to bring lawmakers back and that he called the request from the senate leaders, an impulsive proposal.

A joint senate and house review committee has already announced plans for a public meeting, questioning those involved and to gather information on what led to the abandonment.

Senator Setzler says a halt on electricity rate increases is necessary before moving forward.

"I think the sooner we get back, the sooner we get to look at it and everybody stands down and no action is taken until some of these determinations are made, the better the rate payers of South Carolina are."

There's no word on if the General Assembly will come back. However, both Senators Setzler and Massey want to return in September.
