Shoppers Hit Stores for Tax Free Weekend

Shoppers across the Midlands are taking advantage of the discounts.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) – Shoppers across the Midlands are hitting the stores for the tax free holiday weekend.

A lot of items will be exempted from the state's six-percent sales tax.

The tax holiday runs until midnight August 6.

“We know that there's the sidewalk sales, there's going to be a lot of 50 percent off,” Shopper Stephani McPherson explained.

McPherson said tax free weekend is the perfect time to hit the stores.

“I'm preparing for my senior in high school and my senior in college,” the mom of two said. “I buy them something, I buy Stephani something.”

The South Carolina Department of Revenue says in the past, shoppers have saved up to $3 million.

“We were very busy yesterday and we've seen a lot of traffic in today,” Stacey Collins with Copper Penny in Five Points said.

The store manager said shoppers could save up to 89 percent.

“Definitely some mothers and daughters coming in to get their daughters some things for rush or for class and sorority events and then we do have some people just trying to find a good deal,” Collins said.

“A lot of the retail stores are getting in cute fall transitional pieces so there's a lot of excitement in the air,” Elliott Bridgers with Mainstream Boutique on Devine Street said.

The store owner said she is happy to see how the special weekend brings in more support for small businesses.

“Certainly, when you support small businesses that money goes right back into the community as far as jobs and the well-being of the citizens of the community,” Bridgers said.
