Sumter County Crime Rate Lowest In Years

The Sumter County Sheriff says the county's crime rate is the lowest it's been in 12 years

Sumter County, SC (WLTX) -- The Sumter County Sheriff's Department said the county's crime rate is the lowest it's been in 12 years.

"We've seen a decrease each year in crime," said Sumter County Sheriff, Anthony Dennis.

According to statistics, the number of burglaries dropped nearly 40 percent from 2012 to 2016 and there was just one murder in 2016 compared to five in 2012. Sheriff Dennis said he is proud of the progress the department has made throughout the years.

"It's a passion that these officers have in law enforcement," he said.

Dennis also believes the relationship the department has with the citizens of Sumter county has affected the crime rate numbers.

"Without the citizens and cooperation between law enforcement and the citizens, we would not have seen this decrease," said Dennis.
