Sumter recovers after the hurricane

Sumter, SC (WLTX)- Residents in Sumter are starting to get back on their feet following Hurricane Matthew, as all damaged roads are now passable, most have power back on, and debris cleanup continues.

Sumter County Public Works said they will have debris pick-ups through October 30th. They have already had 900 tons of yard debris brought to the county landfill.

The Sumter County Emergency Management Director Erik Hayes said the county did experience some standing water on roadways, but there was no flooding to homes and property.

As recovery continues, the county is also one spot in the state where survivors can get some extra help from the Red Cross and Goodwill stores through a $35 clothing voucher program.

Those who need the help must contact the Red Cross by calling (800) 768-8048.

After working with individuals and assessing their damage, they will then issue a referral letter.

That letter should then be brought to a Palmetto Goodwill Job Link Center to be given a voucher.

The Midlands locations are below:

Sumter – 1028 Broad St. Sumter, SC 29150

Orangeburg – 1734 St. Matthews Rd. Orangeburg, SC 29115

Goodwill said they will cover $35 for all family members that have been affected.
