Sumter Police Say Suspect Dead After Shootout with Officers

Sumter police had an officer-involved shooting.

Sumter, SC (WLTX) - Sumter police say a suspect is dead following a shooting between that person and officers late Saturday night.

Sumter Police Spokesperson Tonyia McGirt said the incident began as a domestic disturbance call at the Sumter Mall around 9:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they say the suspect drove off, and officers chased him.

That pursuit ended when at least one of the vehicle involved crashed near the intersection of North Guignard Drive and Miller Road near Central Carolina Technical College.

McGirt says at the end of the chase, there was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the suspect that ended with the suspect's death. It's unclear how many officers were involved in the gunfight.

The man who died has not yet been identified.

Further details are expected sometime Sunday.
