Supermoon Will Be Visible Tonight

Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The supermoon will be visible across the Midlands Monday night. Most of us probably missed the supermoon Sunday night, but you will get another chance tonight.

The clouds and rain prevented most of us from enjoying the event Sunday night, but tonight with less cloud cover, better viewing conditions are expected for the Midlands.

According to NASA, tonight will be just as good a night to view the supermoon. The difference between Sunday night and Monday night will be very subtle, and you would probably could not tell the difference anyway.

The best place to view the supermoon is away from urban areas where light pollution can affect the appearance.

An elevated area in the country may be best for us in the Midlands, but if you are closer to the mountains, that is a good spot as well.

The only issue we may see tonight is smoke from the wildfires in the Upstate and in North Carolina, this may give the moon a more orange hue tonight.

Even if it is a little hazy, it may be worth it to take a glance at the moon, since it will not be this close again until November 25, 2034.

The term supermoon is not an astronomical term. It has come to refer to any full moon that occurs around the same time as lunar perigee, when the moon is closest to Earth in its elliptical orbit.
