The Scariest Named Community in SC

A trip to Spiderweb, SC.

Aiken County, SC (WLTX) -- It just might be the scariest sounding place in all of the state, but Spiderweb, South Carolina is not what it seems.

Along Williston Road, in rural Aiken County, you will likely miss Spiderweb. It is just a small dot on the map. An unincorporated community near Beech Island.

Mary Payne has lived off Spider Webb Road, spelled differently than Spiderweb, for over 50 years.

"We got a lot of spiders, and I love it because it is off, back (the road). I don't have much traffic coming by," said Payne.

She says the name Spiderweb comes from a former school that was torn down, but the reaction from outsiders is always the same.

She said, "It is really weird. One time I was talking to this lady on the phone. She asked me what my address was. She said, 'Oh my goodness, I've never heard of that name."

Payne responded, "Nope. Everybody thinks it is real peculiar, funny, a funny name."

Even though the name does not suggest it. Payne says this is a very pleasant place. She said, "I've got some good neighbors and we just live happy around."

A few other Halloween-named areas in South Carolina include: Pumpkintown in Pickens County in the Upstate and Devils Cross Roads is in Newberry County.
