TSA Seeing an Uptick in Credit Card Knives in SC

Columbia, SC (WLTX)- You may be surprised to find out what some of your fellow travelers attempt to carry onto the plane you could be boarding.

Transportation Security Administration gave News19 a rare look at some of the items confiscated by TSA at the Columbia Metropolitian Airport. Steve Corey is the Federal Security Director in South Carolina.

"That's the first time I have seen a chocolate gun. Obviously, it looks like a firearm and in the x-ray it is a dangerous item because it resembles a firearm," said Corey.

Corey says there is an uptick in the amount of guns and certain knives collected by TSA. In 2014, officers confiscated 20 guns from airports across the state.

"Most typically what we are seeing is passengers saying I didn't know a firearm is in my bag," said Corey.

Another item gaining popularity is credit card knives.

"It looks just like a credit card and typically it will either have a composite or a metal blade that is embedded in the credit card itself. They can fold it into a different manor and use it as a cutting tool," said Corey.
