Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Rideshare service uberX launched today in South Carolina, offering their transportation in the four major urban areas of the state.
"The advertisement said be your own boss, so that was a plus for me," said Uber Driver, Patricia Shamberger.
Uber is not you regular taxi service. You set up your rides on an app, there is no money exchanged by hand and for drivers like Patricia Shamberger, they use their own vehicles.
"I get to make my own hours and because I am going back to school, I can do this and go to school and it not be a conflict," said Shamberger.
The service launched in Columbia this week and all you have to do is download the app and register. Bill Guernier with Uber says its even cheaper than most cabs.
"We get a lot of feedback everyday from people saying why aren't you here, why aren't you there and one of the main places we heard was Columbia, so we are really excited to be there," said Guernier.
All off the drivers receive 80 percent of the passenger fare, which can be cheaper than a traditional taxi and go through a background check.
"Every driver goes through a background check as well as motor vehicle checks and check them against the national sex offender registry and every trip is insured up to one million dollars per accident by a policy that Uber has obtained."
Guernier says the job is very attractive to drivers because of its flexibility.
"What Uber is, its completely different, you use your personal vehicle and a lot of people just do it to fill their down time. You know do a few rides here and there."
And for Shamberger, she is fulfilling a dream that she wanted to do years ago...
"I wanted to be a taxi driver but I didn't have a chauffer license but with this I have my regular license and I can drive."
As a part of Uber's introduction to South Carolina, they're offering everyone their first 5 rides free (up to $25 each ride) through July 24th.
