Upstate Deputy Facing Domestic Violence Charges

A deputy with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office is on administrative leave in connection with a domestic violence investigation in Pickens County, authorities said.

Herman William McDonald, of Hallmark Circle, Easley, was arrested Saturday and charged with domestic violence first degree, according to a warrant.

McDonald was intervening in a physical altercation between his girlfriend and ex-wife on Saturday when he pushed his ex-wife to the ground then choked her until she saw black rings in her vision, according to the warrant.

The couple's 10-year-old child witnessed the altercation, according to the warrant.

Pickens County deputies were called to the scene, but McDonald and his girlfriend left  before authorities arrived, said Chief Deputy Creed Hashe, spokesman for the Pickens County Sheriff's Office.

GCSO was notified of the investigation by the Pickens County Sheriff's Office, said Sgt. Ryan Flood, Sheriff's Office spokesman.

McDonald has been placed on non-paid administrative leave, Flood said.
