Columbia, SC (WLTX) The University of South Carolina confirms that a medical student at the school has died while on a mission trip to Peru.

The school said Sunday night that Seth Thomas, a second-year medical student, was killed in what appears to be a hiking accident.

The school says Thomas was in the country working with a Peruvian non-profit to improve women's health in a clinical program through Augusta University.

Authorities say Thomas went for a hike on Friday and did not return.

A school spokesman says the university has been in contact with the family to offer their full support in this time of need, and counselors will be made available for students, faculty, and staff.
