USC Student Killed in Columbia Moped Accident

The accident remains under investigation.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - News19 has learned a University of South Carolina student was killed in a moped accident Wednesday night in Columbia.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified Friday the victim in the collision as 22-year-old David Newell. Friends of the Newell told News19 he attended the school.

Columbia police say Newell was driving a moped when he was hit from behind by a speeding truck dragging it down the road before both vehicles hit a tree.

The driver of the truck also suffered serious injuries and remains in the hospital.

Charges are pending against the driver of the truck, according to Columbia Police. The investigation is ongoing.
