Victim of Fatal Fire Identified as Dentist

Sumter, SC (WLTX) - Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock has identified the victim of an early morning fire as a retired dentist.

Bullock says Dr. Edmund McDonald Jr., 61, died in the fire, which took place just after midnight on Runnymede Boulevard.

Sumter Fire Captain Michael Ward says when firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the house, and it took them about an hour to get the flames under control.

Ward says three people--McDonald and two women--were inside the home when the blaze began, but the women were able to get out safely. Officials say they found McDonald in the living room once they searched the building.

The fire began in the kitchen, investigators say, but a cause of the fire hasn't been determined.
