Lawyers Wade Through Dozens of Potential Jurors in Slager Trial

What We Know about the Michael Slager Trial

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP, WLTX) - Lawyers for the prosecution and defense in the trial of a former police officer accused of killing an unarmed man spent Monday going through a list of  dozens of potential jurors.

Thoses jurors will decide the fate of Michael Slager, who's charged with murder in the death of 50-year-old Walter Scott. Almost 200 potential jurors will be evaluated in a process that's expected to last well into Tuesday.

Back in April of 2015, Slager, who was working for the North Charleston Police Department, pulled over Scott for a broken tail light violation. Dash cam video showed Scott running from the vehicle.

After a short foot chase, Slager confronted Scott in a nearby private park. A cell phone video showed part of what happened next: Slager pulling his service weapon out, and firing multiple shots at Scott as he ran away, killing the man.

The video was shown around the state, nation, and the globe. It was among the pieces of evidence that led state police to charge Slager with murder, and for the City of North Charleston to fire Slager.

Slager, however, has maintained from the beginning that he feared for his life, and his attorney said days ago that there's more to the video than what the public has seen so far.

If convicted Slager, faces 30 years to life.
