Whole Neighborhoods Affected By Nuclear Project Shutdown

The Irmo community is among those who are heavily affected by the massive layoffs.

Chapin, SC (WLTX) - Whole neighborhoods in and around the V.C. Summer Nuclear Power Plant are being affected by the layoffs.

SCE&G and Santee Cooper announced Monday they were abandoning a project to build two new nuclear reactors at the V.C. Summer in Fairfield County. The decision leaves 5,600 people without a job.

In a new neighborhood of Chapin, Eagles Nest has at least a dozen homes with families who were directly affected.

A day after the announcement, the streets of Chapin looked unusual.

Garage doors were open, cars were parked and folks were sitting outside on the porch trying to decompress what just happened to them.

On any other Tuesday Ryan Frank would be working at the Nuclear Plant and Shannon with their two-year-old daughter. Not this Tuesday.

Both were home trying to figure out what they'll do next. Shannon quit her job to come here for his and now they're out of both. They just got a new play ground for their baby and they're afraid they'll have to move away and she won't be able to use it.

Shannon says that although it's hard for them, other friends had it worse. "Some lost their health insurance at 12 last night" she said. She told News19 about a friend who stocked up on epi-pens before her health insurance went out.

She's a part of a yoga class that had their grand opening today but there were a few women who were impacted by the layoffs that they opened with a small prayer for them.

Chapin Yoga Center has a few of their members wondering what they'll do next. The owner, Ashley Pettit says she knows the business can be hurt but she's more worried about the families that have now become a part of her own.
