Wilson Boulevard Set To Reopen This Spring

It's been almost two years since the flood, and you still can't drive though a portion of Wilson Boulevard in Blythewood. That will change by next Spring.

Blythewood, SC (WLTX) - It's been almost two years since the Historic Flood and you still can't drive through a portion of Wilson Boulevard in Blythewood, but that will soon change.

"It was terrible because the water first went into the basement and then it washed out the road, so that was horrific," Harriet Moyd said.

Moyd has lived along Wilson Boulevard for 12 years, but when the Lake Elizabeth dam failed after the Historic flood, the road was washed out, forcing Harriet and everyone else to take the long way around.

"It's very frustrating, especially when you want to go right down the street, but you have to go around the lake and if you're not familiar with the area you can get lost," she said.

The Lake Elizabeth Homeowners' Association decided to abandon the dam, allowing the Department of Transportation to plan a fix for the road.

"We're actually getting ready to start construction out here," Derek Frick said.

Frick is an engineer with SC DOT.

"We're basically trying to restore a stream that has been a lake, so it's trying to make a new stream that is going to function as a new stream, so there is a lot of remediation techniques, buried stumps and things of that nature to allow that stream to function," he said.

The project will cost about $2 million. Once the stream is routed where it needs to go, work on the road can begin.

"At that point they'll be able to start repairing the washed out area and the road, install guard rails, repave (and add) permanent pavement markings," he said.

The project will start next month and it is expected to be finished by Spring of 2018.

"I'm happy. I'm truly elated to see something finally get done around here," Moyd said.
