WLTX/Richland Recycles Day a Big Success!

Richland County, SC (WLTX) - The 2014 WLTX/Richland County Recycles Day was a big success, thanks to our viewers!

From 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, nearly 1,000 cars showed up at the State Fairgrounds to drop off materials.

Richland County Solid Waste employees collected electronics, metals, tires, and chemicals to keep them out of landfills. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture also was there to take pesticides.

Here are the preliminary estimates of how much was collected:

Pesticides: 7,000 pounds

Other household waste: 30,000 pounds

Tires: 20,000 pounds

Cooking oil: 1,000 pounds

Electronics: 70,000 pounds

Paper shredded: 8,000 pounds

Mattresses: 1,700 pounds

Batteries: 1,000 pounds

Fluorescent bulbs: 2,000 pounds
