McLeod to Run for Lourie's State Senate Seat

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - State Representative Mia McLeod has become the first person to seek the state senate seat that's being vacated by Joel Lourie.

McLeod sent a statement late Sunday night saying she intends to run for Senate District 22, which includes northeast Richland County and part of Kershaw County.

McLeod has served in the House the beginning of the 2011 legislative session.

The head of the State Democratic Party confirmed over the weekend that Lourie would not seek reelection to the seat that he's held for over 10 years. "[Lourie] wants to concentrate on his business and spend more time with his family," State Rep. Jaime Harrison said.

Lourie was first elected to the House in 1998, then successfully ran for the Senate in 2004.
