Woman Attacked by Bear in Her Driveway

Bear attack victim lives to tell about it

FREDERICK CO., MD (WUSA9) - A Maryland grandmother was mauled by a bear in her own driveway a little over a week ago.

Sixty-three-year-old Karen Osbourne was attacked four separate times, from three different directions, over a roughly 35 minute period. This story began when the neighbor’s dog chased one of the bear’s cubs up a nearby tree.

“I heard this tremendous growling,” Osbourne said.

She was walking down her driveway to see why the dog was barking. It was about 9:00 p.m.

“The bear came out on two feet,” Osbourne said. “And she grabbed me by my face, and she threw me to the ground.”

During the attack, Osborne slowly reached for her phone and dialed 911. The call failed. She tried again.

Victim: “A bear has attacked me. I’m [lying] in the driveway.”

Operator: “What attacked you”?

Victim: “Bear, and he’s still here. Please help me. Please come now. Send someone now. I’m being attacked by this bear and he’s coming back.”

The bear “literally” bit her arm in half, she said.  Before she came back and “grabbed the top of my head with her teeth.”

Victim to operator: “Hurry. He’s broken my arms and my legs. I can’t move. And I’m bleeding. And I’m going to die.”

The officers arrived and surrounded her with rifles as the medics loaded her onto the gurney. The bear was some 50 feet away.

The bear broke Karen’s teeth and pelvis, severed bones and tendons and lacerated her face and neck. She is expected to make a full recovery. But she is saddled with Karen’s $200,000 in medical bills.

The bear was well-known in the neighborhood. It has been since been put down.
