Melania Trump Speechwriter Admits Mistake

Cleveland, OH (WLTX) - The speechwriter who helped prepare Melania Trump's remarks Monday at the Republican National Convention now admits some of Michelle Obama's phrasing got into the address made by the wife of the GOP nominee.

The Trump campaign released a statement Wednesday from Meredith McIver, an in-house staff writer with the Trump Organization.

Commentators have cited the similarities between two paragraphs from Melania Trump's speech and one delivered by Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic Convention.

She says while working with Melania Trump on the speech by phone, they discussed people who inspired Mr. Trump's wife, and that one of those people included Michelle Obama. Over the phone, she says Melania read passages from Mrs. Obama's 2008 speech as an example, and some of the phrasing during that draft wound up being part of the final speech.

McIver says she did not check Mrs. Obama's speeches, which was a mistake. "I feel terrible for the chaos I have caused Melania and the Trumps, as well as to Mrs. Obama. No harm was meant.'

McIver says she offered Donald Trump her resignation, but the Republican nominee rejected it, saying, "people make innocent mistakes and that we learn and grow from these experiences.
