Detroit, MI (Detroit Free-Press) - A 22-year-old pregnant woman survived after being bound, driven to Detroit, set on fire and shot early Saturday morning.
The woman, who was 9-months pregnant, returned from a movie with the father of her unborn child, and dropped him off at his Warren house on the 8500 block of Sherman when she was approached from behind, Warren police Sgt. Dave Geffert said.
The woman's hands, feet and eyes were bound with duct tape. She was then forced into her car and driven to an unknown place in Detroit where she was doused with lighter fluid, set on fire and shot once in the upper back, he said.
"She didn't know where she was at the time," he said.
The woman, whose name and city of residence are unavailable, was able to quickly put the fire out by rolling on the ground.
"Right after the assailant had shot her, he fled the scene," Geffert said. "I'm saying 'he' because she reported a male voice, unknown description."
Her attacker or attackers fled, leaving the woman's car behind. She was able to break free from the duct tape, drove to a gas station in Detroit and called her mom who met her.
The pair started driving to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, saw Royal Oak officers, and flagged them down, Geffert said.
A condition report was not available on the woman today, and it's unclear where she is currently being treated.
"She's expected to make a recovery," Geffert said.
An ultrasound was performed on her unborn child and the baby appears fine, he said.
Detectives are continuing to investigate the case
