Columbia, SC (WLTX -- Beginning Monday at 7pm, and continuing until May of 2014, the South Carolina Department of Transportation will be widening I-20 to 6 lanes in both directions between I-77 and Spears Creek Church Road.
The work will be conducted between 7pm and 7am during weekdays, and the project will cause traffic patterns to shift occasionally, but the over-all goal of SCDOT is to have minimal impact on daily commuter traffic.
Along with widening the existing 4 lanes to 6, the eastbound bridge across Alpine Road will be replaced, the westbound bridge will be widened, and noise and barrier walls will also be installed or replaced at various locations along the 6 mile stretch.
Lanes will be shifted and traffic closed in various lanes for the length of the construction during the evening work hours of 7pm - 7am.
As with all Construction Zones in South Carolina, speed limits inside the construction work zone will be lowered to 55mph during the day, and at night once work begins, speeds will be lowered to 45mph.
The anticipated completion date is late May, 2014.
