Pelion, SC (WLTX) - Lexington County deputies are investigating after a hand grenade was found at Pelion High School Friday.
According to deputies, a teacher found the weapon in a science laboratory at the school. District officials say administrators followed procedure, evacuated the room and called emergency officials. They then sounded the fire alarm to evacuate the entire school.
Students were outside for about an hour, according to the district.
Investigators say it appears the grenade had been there for some time.
Deputies took the weapon and removed it from school grounds. They are trying to determine how the weapon got there and if it was a live grenade that could have been detonated.
The district says emergency responders said there was never any danger to students or staff.
