Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A blanket of snow fell on parts of Fairfield and Kershaw Counties Saturday, as a cold front mixed with a disturbance gave the Midlands its first serious winter weather of the season.

The heaviest snow moved in around 5:30 p.m. into Fairfield County. The system then pushed into Kershaw County, where snow accumulated from Camden northward.

The lightning associated with the storm created the phenomenon known as "thundersnow" as it moved through the area.

News19 Meteorologist Daniel Bonds says 1 to 2 inches of snow fell in parts of Fairfield and Kershaw Counties, with one one report of 3.5 inches near Longtown in Fairifeld County. Sumter and Lee County also saw slight accumulation, and even parts of Lexington and Richland County saw a brief dusting.

Some viewers reported graupel, which is a snowflake that has frozen droplets of water covering it. (It appears similar to hail)

Sunday is expected to be clear but cool, with a projected high of 48 degrees.
