COLUMBIA, South Carolina (WLTX)- People filled the new reading room at Bradley Elementary School in Columbia Monday morning.
Students, volunteers and business leaders got a chance to see the new classroom filled with bright colored furniture.
This is all part of a program called Leadership Columbia. The Leading by Reading Project partenered with the Midlands Reading Consortium to help elementary students learn how to read.
Tom Ledbetter is one of the many volunteers who reads each week to students. This semester, his student is 6-year-old CJ.
"It's something that is extraordinarily enjoyable for me, for the people that I work with and for the students that I'm engaged with," Ledbetter said.
And this program is more than just helping a child pick out a book off the shelf; volunteers get to watch students reach their goals.
"It's extraordinary to see the students progress in their reading skills," Letbetter said.
